WITH swine flu now confirmed in the UK and the World Health Authority saying it cannot be contained, Guernsey’s Health Department meets today to discuss the threat to the island.

This follows an emergency meeting yesterday that discussed the response to the swine flu outbreak.

Members of the Pandemic Flu Planning Group, the director of public health, States pharmacists and representatives from the States Emergency Planning Team were at the briefings.

Public health director Stephen Bridgman said it was uncertain what threat N1H1 swine flu posed to the island.

‘At the moment it is not clear whether it will run its course and burn out in Mexico or develop into something more serious,’ he said.

‘We are therefore keeping a close eye on developments and will continue to monitor communications from the Health Protection Agency and the World Health Organisation and from the UK’s chief medical officer.’

He encouraged the public to stay calm.

To be honest it proberly isnt that bad its got the same symptoms as normal flu, and it would of been like this when flu first started and the people in mexico are properly dieing cause of poor helth care so there really isnt need to worry. :)

    I agree Luci

We do not need to start people panicking. Influenza does result in death for some people – has done for years. It just doesn’t get media coverage.

Sensible hygeine – hand washing etc and staying home if you feel ill will stop viruses spreading. Common sense will prevail hopefully.

I think that swine flu is probably just like normal flu and people are just making a fuss over nothing. Although I do have to say that I live with a nurse so I could just be underestimating the seriousness of this illness.

My stepdad is watching the news 24/7 because he thinks his mother is in danger as she is in the USofA.

At our school the yr 11 boys are going round wearing masks and they are taking the mick out of this ‘flu.
