GUERNSEY’S weekend invasion of the Stafford Hotel in St Helier will not be quickly forgotten.

Two marvellous nights of darts saw the Caesareans dominate the CI championship finals but then, the following evening, the Sarnians stormed back and took both inter-insular team matches, which was always the main objective of the weekend.

‘But that’s normally how it works in these inter-insulars,’ said Guernsey men’s team captain Mick Le Gallic, cheerfully.

‘Whichever island side wins the individual darts on the Friday, invariably loses the teams the next night,’ he added.

Le Gallic’s comments were prophetic because at the time the two team matches had yet to start in front of an excited audience dominated by 140 trippers from Guernsey.

Le Gallic, the Guernsey skipper, must have been a tad worried when Eddie Le Bailly, his opposite number, won the first match of the night. But he need not have been, as the Sarnians romped ahead and had the match in the bag at 5-2.

Mark James and Mel Berridge, who earned the player of the match trophy, won the last two games at the death to make the scoreline more respectable for the home side.
