Fishermen all at sea over plans for new limit

Monday 4th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.

0685515THE fishing industry has not been kept informed about plans to control waters within 12 miles of the island, the Guernsey Fishermen’s Association has claimed.

UK authorities confirmed last year that they were happy for Guernsey, Alderney and Sark to have their territorial seas extended from three to 12 miles and Commerce and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer told the States last week that ‘good, steady, if not fast  progress had been made’.

She said Guernsey could not bring in the changes unilaterally and needed the agreement of the other islands to proceed.

That agreement had now been reached, she added.

But Deputy David De Lisle (pictured) was disappointed with the progress made after Deputy McNulty Bauer had assured the States in 2008 that legislation would be in place this year.

When responding to Deputy De Lisle’s questions, Deputy McNulty Bauer said proposals to increase the limits were now with the UK’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consideration and she expected a report to come to the States by the end of this year.

But a spokesman for the GFA said it did not know what the department’s plans were because no consultation had taken place.

Typical of our States – so full of their own self importance that they don’t feel the need to involve the local fishing industry in discussions about extending our controlled fishing limits.

If we had an open dialogue between all parties then maybe our States representatives could actually ask the fisherman for their views on how the extended fishery could be managed and sustained for the future. If we want to protect our fisheries we need the fishermen on board (no pun intended) and we certainly won’t achieve that by excluding them from these important discussions.

    CD, quite right–
However as I see it most of the deputies and some States members are either to scared or too Idle to challenge the top lot

WHY? are you afraid?, don’t you realise that if you speak out, then the people will be with you all the way; keep quiet, and like little mice you’ll squeek away in a corner.
