Greens face champs

Wednesday 6th May 2009, 2:30PM BST.

Tony VanceGUERNSEY have been drawn in the same group as defending champions Gibraltar in Aland.

As the Greens did not compete in the Rhodes 2007 NatWest Island Games, they were not seeded for the 2009 tournament.

And as a result they have been pulled out of the bag to play in Group B, which is headed up by Uefa hopefuls Gibraltar, who they will play in their first match at noon on Sunday 28 June.

The other two teams in the group are Ynys Mon (Anglesey), who the Sarnians will play the next day at 4pm, and Froya, which will be the last group game at 7pm on the Tuesday for Tony Vance’s side.

‘If you’re going to win this competition, you’ve got to beat the best,’ said Vance (pictured).

‘It’s certainly a tough group, but it’s not beyond our capabilities. Ultimately we’ve got three tough games there, starting with the toughest games in Gibraltar and Ynys Mon.

‘We’re looking forward to it. We’ll be working very hard.’
