Legend Bucknor to umpire here
Thursday 7th May 2009, 2:30PM BST.
UMPIRING legend Steve Bucknor is coming to Guernsey to officiate in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division Seven.
The Jamaican (pictured) stood in 128 Test matches before retiring from the top flight earlier this year.
But he will be in action again in the week-long tournament that gets under way a week on Sunday.
The head of Guernsey Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, Ralph Anthony, sees it a massive coup for the local game.
‘I think it’s great anyone of that standard coming over, especially if we get a chance to talk to him or just to go and watch him perform,’ he said.
‘I hope we get some wheels in motion to be able to talk to him. It’s a hell of a boost for the island to have someone like him come over.’
Instantly recognisable for his tall and hunched figure, the 62-year-old also went by the nickname of ‘Slow Death’ due to the long time he took over his decisions.
