CI champion surprises the French

CHANNEL Islands champion Kate Cadigan from Jersey took the women’s Butterfield Senior Squash Open title this weekend.
Competing as a late entry, the feisty but very much on-form Cadigan took the French visitors by surprise, coming through four tough matches to meet Sarah Moineau in the final.
Her dream was almost broken in the semi-final against Moineau’s sister, Lea, in a five-set match, but Cadigan managed to survive five match balls to take her into the final.
The final was also an epic five-setter where Cadigan seemed to grow in confidence and strength as the match progressed, grinding her opponent into submission.
The men’s final was an all-French affair with number one seed Gurval Isambard, playing 16-year-old Arthur Moineau (ranked 12th U-17 in Europe).
Isambard (pictured) defeated Moineau with his accuracy and mixed-paced shots to take the third and fourth games comfortably.
Guernsey’s top men were not far behind the French visitors with Ben Rosec in fifth position, Mark Roberts seventh and Steve Le Ray ninth.
