Licensees back dry zone in Cornet Street
Friday 8th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.
LANDLORDS of pubs at the top of Cornet Street have welcomed the road’s inclusion in the alcohol free zone on Liberation Day.
Police announced the extension of the zone yesterday.
The Cornerstone landlord Richard Cann said he thought it was for the best.
‘It’s easy for us to keep an eye on people who drink on the premises. It’s usually when people drink in the street that problems start,’ he said.
Cock and Bull landlord Stephen Taylor expected a busier Liberation Day because of the zone.
‘Last year we were probably busier than normal because of the alcohol free zone,’ he said.
‘We don’t allow people to drink on the street outside our pub anyway – it is a lot easier to control them inside.’
He said that in the past he had been reluctant to take his children into the centre of Town because of rowdy behaviour, and so thought the zone was a good thing.
Chief Inspector, Operations, Ruari Hardy (pictured) said the decision to extend the dry zone was based on feedback.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
Best thing that happened to Lib Day was the loss of the fighting fair and the reduction in booze and alcohol on the streets. Lib Day used to look like an extension of the Helmsman and is now far better for families.
Well done

I agree with Jackie and the proof of the pudding is in the eating. My wife has just returned from a jaunt round town and has told me what a great atmosphere there is.
Andy – it is sad however sadly there are too many people on this island who can’t handle their drink, or choose to inbibe far too much of it.
Until people learn how to handle their drink and act responsibly, the restriction should remain – sad though it is for the many who can handle alcohol.
