A day left free to enjoy ourselves
Saturday 9th May 2009, 2:30PM BST.
TODAY marks that special date in every islander’s calendar, when we celebrate our freedom.
For many older readers it will be particularly poignant as the memories of that emotional moment in 1945, when the liberating forces freed the islands from German Occupation, have lived with them ever since.
It was a dark period in the islands’ history, but one that enjoyed an incredible outcome.
It is also a time that makes our liberty today feel all the more precious.
As media partners of Liberation Day, as ever we remain keen to support it, recognising its huge significance for our island and its people.
Congratulations should go to the organisers of the celebrations who work for months beforehand to help ensure the day goes well and offers something for everyone.
Which isn’t as simple as it sounds.
It has to reach out to all ages while at the same time offering a mix of quiet reflection and dignity, nostalgia and festivity.
This year’s theme, Remember and Celebrate, seems to sum up that concept perfectly.
From the Church Parade and service to face-painting, Liberation fashion and extreme sports, the committee has tried to cater for everyone.
Despite the challenging economic climate, a host of local sponsors have also once again dug deep to back the Culture and Leisure Department event.
It’s the kind of occasion that illustrates Guernsey’s unique community spirit and ability to work together for the good of all.
And it is precisely these characteristics that helped islanders survive the five protracted years of suppression.
These days are seeming increasingly distant, and next year will witness another major milestone in our liberation legacy as we mark the 65th anniversary of 9 May 1945.
Whether you choose to join in the party atmosphere in Town or prefer to celebrate in another or more private way, it still remains as important as ever to enjoy the day.
After all, our right to do so is one that was hard-fought and much deserved.
