Celebrating Liberation in style
Monday 11th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.
IT’S being described as one of the best Liberation Day celebrations so far.
As our wealth of coverage today reveals, including a four-page special pull-out, everyone that our roving reporters and photographers spoke to was quick to say that the 2009 party had been a huge success.
From the dignity and reverence of the parade and service to the extreme sports and late-night entertainment at the Albert Pier the event appears to have received a resounding thumbs-up.
And despite the challenge of a new venue for the Liberation Day church service, that, too, proved an obstacle easily overcome.
This must be great news for the organisers who, together with the authorities, worked extremely hard to ensure everything went to plan.
It seems clear that the alcohol-free zone has also helped ensure that everyone was able to enjoy the day.
As media partners to the Culture and Leisure Department event, it is also welcome feedback for for the Guernsey Press.
One of the most heartening reports was hearing that islanders, young and old, were enjoying the music and dancing that was laid on especially to achieve just that.
As usual it just goes to show that Guernsey is a genuine community and a very special place to live.
We all already knew that of course.
But it also means that the many invited visitors and tourists who came over especially for the event will now go away with that very important and valuable impression.
The long-term benefits for tourism could add up to a whole lot more than just one successful weekend in May.
Already talk has started on how to make the 65th celebration even bigger and better.
It certainly seems to now have a hard act to follow.
We would be keen to hear how you think next year’s celebrations should be staged, as well as how the day should evolve in years to come.
It is, after all, your day.
