Clean sweep for Pessimists

Monday 11th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Stuart HardyPESSIMISTS have achieved a clean sweep of men’s titles in the Rubis Fuel Supplies Badminton League.

They not only managed to retain their Men’s Division One crown for the second year in succession, having previously won it in 1966, but also topped Divisions Two and Three – a superb achievement.

In their last match of the season – a winner-takes-all battle against Rohais A – the defending champions played quite superbly to win 12-6.

Karl Abbotts and Stuart Hardy (pictured) beat both Rohais pairings of Andy Orme and Daryl Tapp and Glenn Macfarlane and Quentin Petit in two straight games, the latter victory underlining just how far Hardy and Abbotts have progressed this season.

Then Chris Dragun and the ever improving Danny Penney also got the better of the Orme/Tapp combination in straight sets, but narrowly lost their second rubber in three games.

In the reverse games Abbotts partnered Dragun and they secured both the win and the title by beating Orme and Petit in three very close games.
