Lib Day arrests ‘no more than usual night in Town’

Monday 11th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Liberation gigPOLICE, Fire and Ambulance services enjoyed a relatively trouble-free Liberation Day.

However, one of the visiting bands was held by police on the previous night.

Chief Inspector of Operations Ruari Hardy said: ‘One of the groups was detained for a short period of time.’

‘Their driver has been charged with an offence for which he will appear in court on Monday.’

‘No other member of the band has been charged with anything.’

Duty Sergeant Tom Makins said there had been seven arrests between noon on Liberation Day and 3am the next day, which could be directly connected to the Town Celebrations.

‘That really isn’t much more than your usual night in Town and consider that there were many more people about,’ he said.

That would be because you’ve managed to make it the most boring, fun-free day in the calendar. You need to sort it out and have some sort of decent event or there’ll be no attendees within five years.

Funny, Lauren – the people I’ve spoken to who were in town really enjoyed it. Evidently their definition of fun differs from yours…

Well now they have the drink free zones and it has bought down the number of arrests why not bring the fair back?

I think its a shame it’s gone, guernsey is such a boring place (nothing to do on the weekends but shop) and this was one thing that kids would have to look forward to each year.

Being a student now, I haven’t seen the last two liberation days- people used to come back for them but it doesn’t seem worth it now. But if it was anything like the first year they changed lib day, it will be because the police purposely arrested less people to prove their point and stop the old style festival from coming back. I recall watching two men fighting in the street and on any other occasion the police would have jumped at the chance to be their power loving selves and arrest them, but instead they just walked on! what a joke.
