McGrath’s route 66 to title
Tuesday 12th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.
LIGHTNING struck twice for the McGraths when Marc emulated the performance of his cousin in beating Martyn Desperques to win the Norman Wale snooker title.
Two years ago, the island champion lost 3-1 to Clint McGrath in the individual handicap final, but he took it to the decider this time before falling short again against the St Martin’s and island footballer.
Playing the best of five frames, Desperques struck first with breaks of 46 and 37 to quickly overturn the 66 start he was conceding to take the opener.
Any thoughts of an easy ride were swept away though when McGrath (pictured) overcame his first snooker final nerves to take the next two, despite Desperques making a 44 break in the third frame.
But the match was to see-saw back away from McGrath when, with breaks of 36 and 38, Desperques illustrated why he is the lowest handicapper in the island to set up a deciding frame.
Fittingly it proved to be the closest of the night and looked to be heading Desperques’ way until he inexplicably missed a green off the spot when on a break of 39 and needing just the next two colours for the match.
