DIVISION One new club Athletics have announced a new working relationship with the England Universities football squad.
The new link will result in next season as many as three quality players from the England Universities football system playing in the maroon-and-white colours of the revived Guernsey club.
The association between the Tics and England Universities comes quickly after Guernseyman Steve Sharman brought an England Universities representative squad to help Guernsey with their Muratti final preparations.
Following talks between Sharman, who manages the England Universities squad, and Tics representatives, the former agreed to assist the new Guernsey club who are keen to offer young island footballers with pathways in football and as many development opportunities as possible.
‘The idea of developing young players and offering them opportunities that they may never have received from the current clubs is an ideal that has merit and mirrors our programme within university representative football,’ said Sharman, who is based at the University of Warwick.

Here we go!
‘We want to put LOCAL players in the shop window’ – if Tics succeed in playing in an English league I give them less than 3 years before at least 50% of their players are resident in England – they will probably have 15 players on the mainland to cover their away games and therefore no one will see any local talent!!

Is this just total PR? Is it April 1st? Will students who most are probably signed on at a Non league club like Jordon Barnes really travel to Guernsey this year to play in a league which will not test them, have no one looking at them, will mean they can not play 5 aside, sunday league or for any other club on the mainland apart from their University team? Will mean getting up at 5am to catch first flight to Guernsey with no guarantee on delays and then miss out on those student weekends? The cost of 3 players from the UK? I am surprised you are not offering 10 local players money to play every game…or is that the next announcement?

I thought players had to be resident in Guernsey (or at least in the Bailiwick) in order to be eligible to play GFA football or is that no longer the case ?

GFA rule D6 obtainable from their websie…
All competitions shall be restricted to players who, at the time of playing, are permanently resident in the Bailiwick, save for members of HM forces or a student undergoing full-time education or training outside the Bailiwick who at the same time retains a permanent residence in the Bailiwick. A player shall have been in the island for seven days prior to signing a registration form, and shall be eligible for selection once the completed and signed form has been accepted by the League Secretary to the Association.
