A QUARTER of a million pounds is to be levied from the people of St Peter Port for a new constables’ office despite the plans not having been approved.
More than 130 parishioners attended a meeting at St James on Thursday at which it was discussed whether the £2m. project at Les Cotils should go ahead.
After two hours of comments from the audience, the constables were forced to bow to public pressure and adjourn the vote sine die.
Senior parish constable Deputy Jenny Tasker said she was not disappointed with the result. ‘I am really pleased with how the meeting went, but I was hoping we would be able to move on.’
Parishioners did vote through the £702,250 to be levied, which includes the £250,000 the constables were planning to use to start the project.
But that amount cannot be spent until the project has been voted through.
‘The amount has been ringfenced,’ said Deputy Tasker. ‘This means we can come back with more information and then we can move forward.’

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
The last time I went to the constables office was to get a bicycle licence, the first time to get a shilling for 12 rats tails.
The need to go to the CO is becoming less and less and, in the futire will diminish.
This whole affair needs rethinking/investigating. And if the SPP parishioners have got any sense at all will throw this mad cap idea out.
As for the costs? £2.5million for a school hall? Nice work for someone.
