Nick MaA CAMPAIGN to create a traffic-free walking route to St Sampson’s High has gathered momentum.

The Guernsey branch of Living Streets has been working on the idea for two years and believes it has now solved all the land ownership issues.

Having secured backing from the Garenne Group, in the shape of RG Falla Ltd, to carry out work to upgrade and extend the existing path, it will now be focussing on raising £25,000 to cover three years’ rent for some land on a disused vinery site and other contingencies.

It aims to have the route in place by September.

States departments were unwilling to finance the project.

‘We think it’s a fantastic route for students to go to school. It gives them independence and it’s healthy. We should be encouraging pupils to walk and cycle,’ said Living Streets Guernsey branch secretary Pat Wisher.

‘And it reduces the school run traffic, which I’m sure everyone would appreciate.’
