LEE MERRIEN’S first race against the legendary Haile Gebrselassie ended with Guernsey’s finest ever distance runner some way off the pace.
The two were competing over 10 kilometres in yesterday’s Great Manchester Run.
The Ethiopian won the race held in strong winds in 27min. 39sec., while Merrien was sixth Briton and 14th overall in 29-47, 21sec. down on his 2008 time in the same race.
‘In good conditions, I think I’d have gone under 29min.,’ said the Sarnian, joking that he had matched Gebrselassie over the first three strides.
