DALE GARLAND is pondering a switch from the 400 flat to the 400 hurdles at Saturday’s high point of the local track and field season.

The third Golden Series season features dozens of high-class athletes who will fly over for a match which will feature the vast majority of Guernsey’s Island Games team, including Garland.

They include Wales relay squads and among their number former UK champion Matt Elias, who pipped Garland to the national 400 hurdles title in 2006.

‘He ran about 48-dead for the 400 flat in Loughborough, so he’s in OK shape,’ said Garland of the Welsh star.

Steve Green, who was part of the winning GB indoor 4 x 400 relay squad of a couple of years back, is also running the longer hurdles event and because of the class of the entry Garland is swaying towards switching events.

‘I’m undecided whether to run the 400 or the four [hundred] hurdles, but I’m looking forward to giving Matt a race.’

As match manager, Garland can do, of course, what he wishes, but his overriding remit for the match is to provide the right class of opposition for the local stars off to Aland.
