‘Kerbside recycling is desirable but too costly’

Friday 22nd May 2009, 2:01PM BST.

0558993ST SAMPSON’S residents last night rejected a proposal to introduce kerbside recycling to the parish.

The constables have been investigating the concept over the last year but advised parishioners it would be too expensive.

Junior constable Andy Bichard said he was glad the parish decided to go for the £401,078.43 option for two collections of refuse a week. If the parish had decided to also have a collection of glass, cardboard, cans and tins for recycling, the cost could have topped £526,000.

‘We would love to have kerbside recycling,’ he said. ‘But at these prices, we cannot consider it. Kerbside recycling would only be viable on an island-wide basis.’

The vast majority of parishioners agreed that the cost was too high, but the vote against was not unanimous.

Resident Sarah Breton, 45, was disappointed.

‘It would have been good for St Sampson’s to do something clean for the island,’ she said. ‘I hope they will look at it again and in a more positive way.’

Hmmm, problem with Parish meetings is that its easy to massage votes as so few people turn up. See SPP shiny new constable building as an example. Refuse charges, will, or should be taken out of the hands of the parishes.

Agreed jickie – public services like refuse should be organised on an island-wide basis. For a start it would surely save time. It might even save on costs.
The parish system may be quaint but in many ways it is seriously outdated. Gone are the days when people who lived in Torteval never left the parish. Guernsey has shrunk, metaphorically speaking and the methods used should change accordingly.

Recycling too expensive I dont think so; just think of the cost of health effects caused by burning rubbish.
