Deputies split over advocate’s reform ideas for States

Monday 25th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.

APeter HarwoodN ADVOCATE’S view that changes need to be made to the set-up of government has received support from several deputies.

Peter Harwood, pictured, who headed a panel that in 2001 recommended moving to executive government, claimed the issue needed to be revisited when he spoke at the monthly Chamber of Commerce lunch last week.

Several deputies who were present said Advocate Harwood had made some very valid points and agreed that the current set-up of the States was not working.

Deputy Jack Honeybill did not think the States had got it right at present.

‘It would be wrong for government to not look at itself to see how we could improve things,’ he said.

‘Governments are judged on what it achieves and at the moment I’m sorry to say we are not achieving much apart from moaning about each other.

‘I can see where Peter was coming from, but whether something will be done about it within the next three years I do not know.’

Look to the UK, and the mess their ministers(deputies) are in.

Of course they don’t wish to change the present set-up; It benefits them.

In wonder if the “Telegraph” could have a little look in that direction.
