THE courage of one Guernsey girl has inspired three generations of her family to take on the challenge of a lifetime.
When 13-year-old Charlotte Hague-Holmes was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December her parents, Rupert and Caroline, feared the worst.
The Ladies’ College pupil had suffered increasingly severe migraines for two years, lasting up to four days at a time, but when she began to lose the sight in one eye, she was referred to an eye specialist by her optician.
An MRI scan revealed an egg-sized tumour on the left side of her brain. Charlotte’s parents received the news two days later on Friday 28 November that she had a benign brain tumour.
She was flown for treatment at the Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton General Hospital and the following Wednesday underwent a six-hour operation.
Following the operation Charlotte suffered a stroke and partially lost her eyesight.
‘I feel very proud of myself for surviving this tumour and stroke and recovering faster than everyone else expected,’ she said.
Mr Hague-Holmes said the centre had been invaluable to the family and was keen to raise funds for the specialist unit. ‘The work they do with those suffering from neurological conditions cannot be praised highly enough,’ he said.
On 18 July, Mr Hague-Holmes, the legal director at Close International, and three colleagues will join the Royal Marines to run 30 miles across Dartmoor carrying 30lb of kit.
