Scrutiny chairman backs public review, Lowe wants tribunal

Saturday 30th May 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Barry BrehautTHE chairman of the Scrutiny Committee has lent his weight to calls for a full public review of the firefighters dispute.

Deputy Barry Brehaut (pictured) said he would want any review to be open to the public.

‘As chairman of Scrutiny I am anxious that the process is as open and accountable as possible,’ he said.

‘The Scrutiny Committee is not oblivious to the immense public concern regarding this issue.’

Scrutiny will meet on Wednesday to discuss the most appropriate mechanism for a review.

And it is understood that the Policy Council met yesterday also to discuss how a review might best take place.

It is unclear what the parameters of any review would be, although it is believed the handling of the airport firefighters negotiations and the intervention of Chief Minister Lyndon Trott along with the Emergency Powers Authority would be key.

Deputy Brehaut said that the critical element would be that it was undertaken independently and was as open as possible.
