A REJECTED planning application to turn St Saviour’s Tavern into flats has been welcomed by the members of a group who have been campaigning to save their local pub.

Corinne Connolly from Start, which is hoping to bring back the tavern to its former glory or restore the bar to the building, has welcomed the news.

Plans for the former tavern, which was sold in 2007, originally included a bar but the recent application had removed it.

‘It’s very good news. I’m just so happy with the outcome,’ said Mrs Connolly.

She said the presentation Start – which stands for Support Tradition and Restore Tavern – had made to Deputy Peter Sirett, along with the 422-strong petition they had given him, had been worthwhile.

‘Everyone I have spoken to about it has said well done and keep up the good work – it’s just brilliant.

Mrs Connolly added that the campaign would not be giving up just yet.

‘We see it as a positive step forward,’ she said.

Just because the plans were refused, it doesn’t mean that it was because of the lack of licensed premises in them. More likely is the fact that the last thing the island needs are more flats that nobody wants or can afford ….

If the owners don’t want to reopen it as a pub they won’t. Nothing you do or say is going to force them to do what you want, merely possibly prevent them from doing what they want.

If it drags on long enough the building will be left to go to ruin and pulled down on safety grounds.

If it is really financially viable to run it as a pub, then might I suggest you get financing and try to buy it and run it as such. Good luck with that ….
