Watson flies flag
Thursday 4th June 2009, 2:30PM BST.
HEATHER WATSON is Great Britain’s last hope in Roland Garros.
The 17-year-old Sarnian star, who is ranked number 12 junior in the world, has eased through to the girls doubles quarter-finals of the Junior French Open.
With Hungarian partner Timea Babos, they defeated Polina Leykina and Ekaterina Nikitina in straight sets – 6-3, 6-2 – in their third round clash yesterday afternoon.
The success came after the world number three Andy Murray was defeated by Fernando Gonzalez in the men’s singles on Tuesday and Junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson was knocked out of the girls’ singles before yesterday pulling out of the doubles.
Watson and Babos are the competition’s number three seeds.
They now face Katarena Paliivets of Canada and South African Chanel Simmonds, who Watson beat in the Junior Australian Open singles, today.
