Cobo man gets rid of fish stench in disputed car park
Friday 5th June 2009, 2:29PM BST.

A dispute over who owns the car park at Cobo Village has led to a large number of cars being dumped there and the parish and police have no power to remove them. But when someone filled one with rotting fish, 75-year-old Gordon Young decided enough was enough.(Picture by Steve Sarre, 0784566)
A COBO resident has taken it upon himself to remove rotten fish that were causing a nauseating stench in the car park next to Checkers Xpress.
Farmer Gordon Young, 75, yesterday disposed of the remains that had been left in one of the many cars abandoned there in a long-running dispute over who owns the land. He acted after Castel senior constable Barry Paint was told it was not within his powers to remove the rancid fish.
Environmental Health also said it could not get involved because there was no threat to public health.
‘It’s disgusting. How can Environmental Health say they can’t do anything about it?’ said Mr Young, who lives on the nearby Les Genats Estate.
‘I’m going to remove it with or without permission. I don’t care.’
Mr Young said that as soon as he read about the problem in yesterday’s Guernsey Press, he went down to Cobo Village to solve it.
‘You can see how awful it is and the smell will attract rats from miles around.
‘It angers me that someone has done this to cause trouble and I am removing it because it’s a health hazard.’

It’s a sad day for Guernsey when Gordon Young at the age of 75 has to do the dirty work of the people who are paid to sort all this out. it’s pathetic.

Probably the same lovely person that dumped a whole load of rotton fish on L’eree in August last year,I really felt for the guys who had to clean the mess up.The smell was too hideous to describe, what lovely fellow humans we have to share the world with!

Maybe the fish got there by themselves.

I think Gordon should be given a big hand for doing someone elses dirty work! Well done Sir !

I love our senior citizens – they come from an age where health and safety regulations, political correctness, nanny state interference and beaurocracy either didn’t exist or were of far less influence than now. In those days you simply got on with life – if there was a problem, you either fixed it yourself or rallied round to get the job done rather than waiting for a risk analysis, committee meeting and the third drafting of a report.
Throughout history, in strong communities the younger members have respected and learnt from their elders who, by virtue of age and experience, had a far wider knowledge of life. Perhaps we could do worse than recover some of that wisdom.

Yes it was a very high tide!!!!!

all i can say i well done to Gordon !! people who do this to spoil our island should be thrown off . there pathetic GO GORDON xx

Well done Gordon
However how short memories some of you have.
Wasnt Barry Paint the deputy who got sued for damaging someones van??
If so I would have said exactly the same thing as him when confronted with this issue, and it would surprise me if he had attempted to intervene.
We have made our bed with this ludicrous litigious society we now live in, none of our elected deputies will get involved with any of these types of issues.
And why should they if they run the risk of financial penalty??

Well done!
He should’ve put them on Barry’s door step!

Gordon Young I salute you Sir. I’ve always said there’s nothing worse than the smell of rotten fish first in the morning. On a positive note though, I do like the decaying scene in the Cobo car park. The burnt out cars serve as a very fond memory of the good old days we spent at war on this island – evidence that we haven’t moved on at all. Could this be Guernseys very own large art work / sculpture – superb. Keep the cars coming.

What a lovely sight and smell awaits any holiday makers who may come to the island and stay or visit Cobo. You can bet your last cent they won’t be back again.
What a bunch of pillocks run this island!
I can understand Mr Paint’s reluctance to get involved because of the last incident he was involved in which in itself is absolutely ludicrous but well done Gordon, it comes to something when the general public have to show the way to our “leaders”. I wouldn’t trust that lot in the States to run a Tombola stall at the local fair never mind Guernsey.

Was down at Cobo earlier helping myself to the radios in the old cars. I think the place is great! About time Guernsey had a decent car selvage yard. Have my eye on a nice set of alloy wheels on an abandoned Ford Escort, am heading down there tonight with some bricks to grab them.

I went past the Cobo car park today and could not believe the state of some of those abandoned cars, I dont think I would even like to park next to one. What I cant understand is where are the Health and Safety guru’s when we need them, they are certainly a Health and Safety issue, something needs to be done soon before anything drastic happens,it is an accident waiting to happen.

Go Gordon!!
What a load of Pollocks…..

Gordon is a real man that gets things done. Good old Gordon. None of this namby pamby scared of own shadow parochial or ineffective government reps.
Two years on some trickster plays the system to the detriment of the Castel parish and zero happens. absolutley pathetic. If the States had the balls they would tell Holroyd you have 7 days to prove ownership and then remove the cars. Get him to work for it rather than buy it off his mum.
