HEATHER WATSON is just one win away from her first grand slam final – albeit as a junior.
Together with her Hungarian partner Timea Babos, the 17-year-old Sarnian (pictured) blazed her way into the French Open semi-finals at Roland Garros in Paris with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Katarena Pallivets (Canada) and the South African Chanel Simmonds.
The match, played on court three, was all over in just over the hour mark and only the unseeded pairing of Ksenia Killivan (Russia) and Martina Trevisan (Italy) stand in the way of a Guernsey player lining up in the final of one of the biggest tournaments in world tennis.
In total, the Hungarian-Sarnian partnership won 64 points to their opponents 56.
That was despite an inferior first serve percentage and serving up more double faults.
Whereas Watson and Babos made 57% of their first serves, the losers achieved 68%.
On top of that, the winners double-faulted five times to the defeated pairs’ four.
