IT WAS lights, camera, and action at Saumarez Park yesterday as thousands of islanders queued to have their treasures assessed by experts from the Antiques Roadshow.

The BBC programme was filming in Guernsey for the 32nd series of the show – the second presented by Fiona Bruce.

Up to an estimated 5,000 people arrived at the park armed with everything from paintings and prints, ceramics, furniture and militia memorabilia to jewellery and clocks.

Among the first to be filmed for the show were Roy Bougourd and his daughter, Brigette Ingrouille.

They brought Occupation diaries written by Roy’s father, Bill, who wrote more than 560,000 words covering 2,052 pages in seven volumes over six years.

Roy, then aged three, his older brother, William, aged 5, and their mother, Eva, were evacuated on 20 and 21 June 1940. They were on one of the first boats back to the island in July when war ended.

‘My dad started writing immediately after we were evacuated,’ said Mr Bougourd.

His father lived in a terraced cottage in St Sampson’s with German officers commandeering those on either side.

  • The 30-programme series will be broadcast over autumn and winter 2009/10 with Guernsey likely to shown in October or November as one or two programmes.

It was a fantastic event. No groans and moans about queuing and the weather even improved for all. Can’t wait to see it on the tv?
