Director’s dual role scuppers activities firm

Robert Kerry of Outdoor PursuitsOUTDOOR Guernsey still cannot offer activities to States schools despite being endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive.

The adventure activity company passed a recent safety inspection, but now has been told that it cannot work with States schools due to a conflict of interest as one of its directors is employed by the Education Department.

The decision means it can only offer adventure activities to private schools in the island.

Previously, the department had recommended that schools wait for a licensing system to be introduced before making bookings with activity companies.

The Guernsey Sailing Trust, Lihou Charitable Trust and Guernsey Surf School have since been endorsed by Health and Safety.

Bookings for Outdoor Guernsey have been confirmed with schools from Jersey and the UK.

Joint owner and director Robert Kerry (pictured) said the company had decided to put the problem on hold until the winter.

‘We wanted to find out what the answer was and now we know where we stand.

‘We have apologised to the States schools from which we have taken bookings and now we just want to get on with the summer programme,’ he said.
