TRIBUTES were paid yesterday to a Guernsey woman who tirelessly devoted her life to the island community.

Joc Watts, MBE, died on Monday, aged 62, after battling cancer since March.

With her husband, Ray, Mrs Watts ran Meadow Court Farm and was involved in almost every aspect of parish life in St Andrew’s.

The former douzenier was leader of the Floral Guernsey St Andrew’s team which, for the second time, is going for gold this August in Britain in Bloom.

Mrs Watts was a member of the Floral Guernsey council between 2003 and 2007 and led St Andrew’s to one silver and two silver gilt awards between 2004 and 2006 in the parish competitions.

St Andrew’s also represented Guernsey in the 2007 Britain in Bloom, winning gold in the large village category.

‘Joc was a person of immense energy and commitment to everything she did’, said Tony Spruce, chairman of the Floral Guernsey council.

‘She was a woman of considerable energy and will be greatly missed by everybody.’

He said she was never too busy to give her time to the community.

Andrew Tabel, general manager at the Dairy, said Mrs Watts and her family at Meadow Court Farm had always been ardent supporters of the local dairy industry, the breed and the Dairy itself.

I had the pleasure of knowing Joc over the period of about 12 years. Initially i was taught games at Melrose by her. She seemed to be one of those rare breeds of gym teacher that made everyone feel included and enjoy the classes!

Later on, at Ladies College, she saw me through the stages of my Duke of Edinburgh. Her tireless and devoted contribution to this scheme eventually getting her a rightly earned MBE.

She was a great role model to me and to so many young women at the school. Joc certainly lived by example on seizing upon every opportunity that life throws your way.

A wonderful woman, who i feel priviledged to have known in some small way.

An amazing woman, she had great faith in me on my Duke of Edinburgh, and actually talked to us like we were adults. I had the pleasure of working a summer on the farm and she was always so supportive and helpful. She will be greatly missed.
