Social plan addresses campaigners’ causes
Friday 12th June 2009, 11:30AM BST.
A STRONGER system of checks on people who work with vulnerable adults and young people is one of two top priorities of a new social policy plan.
Introducing it yesterday, Health minister Hunter Adam (pictured) said that the island had to adopt a similar law to that in place in the UK.
He said that local people who wanted to work in such areas would need to apply to register with the UK’s Independent Safeguarding Authority.
Information about a person’s ISA status would be stored securely for employers and voluntary organisations to access when recruiting.
‘We have no choice over that. It safeguards all vulnerable people and that is being led by the Home Department. It is vital,’ he said.
The second ‘essential’ – establishing an infrastructure required to comply with new Children and Young People legislation – was also absolutely necessary, he said.
‘There is a law coming in October,’ said Deputy Adam. ‘Because it is legislation, we have to have that in place.’
The priorities were chosen after an extensive selection process, he said.
