FOUR large bronze plaques could be on the move.

They have hung on a wall at Castle Cornet since 1953 and commemorate the life and adventures of Admiral James de Saumarez.

The plaques were originally cast for the obelisk at Delancey Park.

When the monument was destroyed, they were moved to safety at Castle Cornet.

Now that plans are afoot to rebuild the monument, the plaques have been built into the design.

Museums director Dr Jason Monaghan said they have become a part of the castle and described them as ‘very important’ historical pieces.

‘They are currently bolted to the walls and are hefty to move. But we have moved heavy items before.’

Each plaque is more than a metre square and portrays a different aspect of Admiral de Saumarez, who lived during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

They were made in London by art founders H. Young and Co.
