HUNDREDS of primary school pupils will have the opportunity to share in the excitement of the Island Games.

Over the next fortnight members of the 2009 team will visit schools to deliver assemblies about the event.

The assemblies are an initiative between the Education Department, the Guernsey Island Games Association and Guernsey Post.

Alun Williams, lifelong learning manager at the Education Department, will be accompanying the team members and explains the rationale behind the assemblies:

‘The Island Games is a wonderful event and plays a significant role in sports development in Guernsey.

‘These assemblies are an opportunity for pupils to find out about the Games, to appreciate Guernsey’s involvement and to be inspired.

‘After all, these youngsters are Guernsey’s stars of the future and if we can raise their awareness of the Games now, it will pay dividends in the future.’

David Inglis, member of the organising committee of GIGA shares in the enthusiasm to engage with young people to gain an understanding of what commitment means in sport.
