BAILIFF Geoffrey Rowland yesterday advocated the development of a youth parliament.

At the launch of the Primary Schools’ Congress he praised the way Castel Primary’s school council members had presented their ideas about Guernsey to him.

‘I’m hugely impressed. It shows great promise for there one day being a youth parliament, but it would take time.

‘These are the children who will one day be running us,’ he said.

‘What has impressed me most is the sense of responsibility they have.

‘If they are an example of the youngsters who will be in charge of us when we’re older, people will be in good hands,’ said Mr Rowland.

The council, which comprises a representative from each class, told him what they thought was good and bad about Guernsey and what could be changed.

The chairman and secretary of the group, Tyler McKane, 11, and Oliver Ashplant, 11, relayed the school’s ideas.

These included improving public toilets, cleaning beaches, stopping dangerous driving and improving road safety.

Both boys will represent their school alongside other schools at the congress on Monday 22 June.
