THE Queen’s birthday reception at Government House on Saturday saw the Bailiff, John Gallienne, Barbara Benfield and David Miller recognised for receiving honours.

The island’s deputies, headteachers and community group members were among the many people who had the chance to toast the Bailiff, who was awarded a knighthood, and the three Bailiwick residents, who gained MBEs.

Victim Support volunteering group manager Marilyn King also collected an engraved crystal for this year’s Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, on behalf of the Victim Support and Witness Service.

Mrs King said she was very proud to receive it. ‘We’re all very proud. It’s a recognition of all the hard work that the volunteers have put in. It is special to be here today.’

John Gallienne, who received an MBE for voluntary services to the Royal Hospital Chelsea and to communities in Guernsey and Sark, said he was very proud to be at the Queen’s birthday reception.

‘I’m very pleased – I found out on 13 May. I opened the envelope and was speechless. ‘I feel very proud but I feel that the people who have helped me over the years are part of it as well,’ he said.

Sir Geoffrey, dressed in his court attire, said after the loyal toast at noon that he felt overwhelmed.

‘I thought I knew what it would feel like but I feel overwhelmed. Today has been very much akin to my wedding reception because everyone has been shaking my hand – and in that respect it is very special,’ he said.
