Island Games squad members in form for Aland
Tuesday 16th June 2009, 11:40AM BST.
THREE members of the Judo Frascati Club excelled when they attended the High Wycombe Judo Master Competition.
Angelo Dorey, Roberto Mascherucci and Sarah Martel, who are part of the Island Games squad, made the trip, sponsored by King’s Life Centre.
It is classed as one of the hardest competitions for masters within the judo year because it is a high level of competition black belts 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th dan.
The Sarnians, though, proved to be nearly, if not at the same level, of other competitors of this competition.
Martel was the only 1st Kyu, brown belt, in her competition and she was the lightest competitor in the whole competition.
She had to fight against 26.5kg heavier and more experienced opponents.
However, that did not stop her giving 100% in her fights, battling and nearly beating some of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th dan black belts, who in the women’s competition regularly fight in the British squad masters.
She had eight fights and at the end of it she managed to win, deservedly, a bronze cup after a very long and hard day.
Angelo Dorey was the only 1st Kyu, brown belt, in his competition and his task was extremely hard.
However, the hard training and the dedication started to pay off and Angelo did fight at the same level with black belts, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th dan black belts.
He managed to gain another 10 points towards his black belt and win a bronze cup.
Now he needs only another 10 points to gain his black belt award and become the first black belt of Judo Frascati in less than three years -a great achievement.
