Tribunal could be forced

Mike HadleyAN ATTEMPT to force an inquiry into the airport dispute will be made at this month’s States meeting.

The move follows a decision by the Policy Council not to allow Mary Lowe’s requete, which called for a tribunal of inquiry into the row and was signed by 18 deputies, to be debated in the June Assembly. She wants it discussed then because of the public concern surrounding the firefighters’ dispute.

Deputy Mike Hadley (pictured) said yesterday that he was amazed by the council’s announcement and in the next States meeting he would move suspension of the rules of procedure so the requete could be discussed without council’s say so.

‘This shows again the contempt that the council has for the wishes of members of the States,’ he said. ‘At the end of the last meeting of the States it was considered more important to brief the media than members of the States.

‘A cabal made the decision then and now will not allow a timely debate.’

Deputy Hadley said holding back the tribunal meant that Scrutiny would go ahead with its review and then, if the States still wanted a more formal tribunal, then work would be duplicated.

‘If the requete is not considered until July then a great deal of time and money will have been expended fruitlessly by Scrutiny as there will be little point in having two inquiries.’
