CROWDS gathered at Bordeaux on Saturday evening when a boat caught fire.

The engine of the Deborina, a former St Sampson’s pilot boat, caught alight as it came into the bay at around 5.45pm.

According to witnesses, the cabin cruiser had just returned from Sark with several men on board.

Most on board managed to escape, but one had to be rescued from the sea after he got into difficulty.

A second boat, the Crusty Crab, also came loose from its moorings as a result.

Flames could still be seen from the vessel at 9pm.

The burnt-out hulk of the boat was moved from the beach later in the evening by digger.

Police said that they were investigating the incident.

Gosh – who needs telly when you can go and gawp at “real life” in Bordeaux! “Crowds gathered”. What were they hoping to see? I wonder if they brought along flasks and sarnies just to pass the time before the fire crews arrived! Did the “crowds” actually do anything to help I ponder?
