CLASS told in the end yesterday as L’Ancresse won the Channel Islands final of the Hampshire Sevens.

Steve Mahy’s decision to go with the big guns was fully vindicated as his side defeated Wheatlands 4.5-2.5, despite the fewest shots given up by any home player being eight.

The Sarnians had handicaps ranging from scratch to three while in comparison the Jersey visitors started at eight and went out to the maximum allowed in the competition, 15.

The draw resulted in the unfortunate Danny Bisson giving opponent Dave Snell 15 shots, although to be fair to the local man, he put up an excellent fight and was under par for his own round when he eventually lost on the 17th to a three net two.

However, wins for Mahy, Danny and Jamie Blondel and Andy Eggo got the required four points on the board before Garry McFarlane won the 18th to halve his match.

‘You are always going to have a couple of match-ups where the higher handicap guy has a good day,’ Mahy said.

‘Danny Bisson played well, was under par and lost – that’s the luck of the draw. In a situation like that the higher handicapper is under no pressure and they will often come out and raise their game to match the guy they are playing.’
