Lights out on Vase

ST MARTIN’S have been thwarted, for the time being, in their ambitions to play in the nationwide FA Vase.
Saints have learned they have not been successful at securing entry into the prestigious competition this coming season, but only because upgrades to their floodlights will not be completed by the deadline set of 1 July 2009.
However, the club still expects the upgrade to be completed in time for the start of the forthcoming season. Such is the quality of the upgrade that, once the works are complete, the floodlights will not only meet the entry requirements of the FA Vase but also those for clubs playing in the Football Conference.
As an alternative, Saints have recently secured entry into the Hampshire Senior Cup for this season, alongside fellow Guernsey clubs Belgrave Wanderers and Athletics.
Colin Fallaize (pictured), the Saints first-team coach, said they were not giving up on the plan and would try again. ‘While it is naturally disappointing not to have made the FA Vase this season, it is a massive positive that we were accepted into the competition subject to the deadline for the floodlight upgrade, and it is unfortunate that we could not meet it due to circumstances beyond our control.
‘This will hopefully pave the way for entry in the 2010-11 season.’
He is happy with the new challenge. ‘Hampshire provides an excellent alternative for us, and while winning the league and domestic cups remains our priority for this season, I hope the cup will further inspire us in our drive to improve as a club.’
Tics, meantime, have made two further additions to their squad with the signing of former Guernsey defender Ben Duff and double Junior Muratti cap Jason Boscher.
