Petit hopes body will hold out in medal bid

QUENTIN PETIT is aiming to end his Island Games career on a high next week.
The Guernsey badminton star (pictured) admitted that these Games have taken on an added significance because the sport was not included in Rhodes two years ago and from a personal perspective the 34-year-old is anxious to give it his best shot at reaching the podium.
‘This one is probably going to be my last as I am keeping myself held together with sticky tape and a prayer,’ Petit said.
‘The disappointment of not being included in the Games in Rhodes has definitely had an effect on the amount of people being available for Aland.
‘Being now four years on from Shetland, obviously there have been players who have gone on to do different things and have not been able to dedicate the time to badminton.
‘Having said that, they are all four years older too and, as I can relate to, it is very hard to get through the training when you’re four years older.’
The withdrawal of former England international Ian Sullivan due to injury is a blow to Guernsey’s chances of a team medal, but Petit still believes that target is achievable.
‘We will give it our all,’ he said.
‘We have people who have a lot of experience and are still very strong players, so anything is possible.’
