Buskers call for cover

Friday 26th June 2009, 1:00PM BST.

Dave FullerLOCAL musicians have said they are unlikely to busk in Guernsey if the Culture and Leisure Department does not pay for their public liability insurance next year.

A street performer must have insurance in case of an injury to a member of the public.

Culture and Leisure has paid for the cover to get the busking scheme started this year, but a department spokesman said the situation would be reviewed at the end of the year.

Currently it would cost a musician between £200 and £500 to obtain the insurance for a year.

That would provide about £2.5m.-worth of cover.

Guitarist Dave Fuller (pictured) said he would struggle to make enough money to cover that cost.

‘I would be afraid I wouldn’t make enough, it would depend if you busked every day.

‘It would be a concern that I wouldn’t be able to afford it, but I wouldn’t do it for the money,’ he said.

Those figures for public liability insurance seem a bit high. For £38 I get £1,000,000 public liability, £10,000 personal accident and £800 instrument cover. Membership of the M.U. also covers for public liabilty .

I agree with George I pay £58 for £2,000,000 PL cover as well as insuring all my equipment. Try calling or emailing Blackfriars or Simply Business they are very good and will get you the best deal. All musicians should be insured for public liability anyway, you are taking one heck of a risk not having it as I think you will find a lot of venues won’t cover musicians for public liability.

Totally agree with the above. Membership of the Musicians’ Union is around £150 a year and gives you PL insurance as well as a whole host of other benefits. (Guernsey people can join the UK South West region)

I am sure that a local insurance co can come up with a sensible solution to the problem, and the figures quoted are just pulled from a hat I think.
