GUERNSEY’S bid to regain the team table tennis gold could hardly have got off to a better start yesterday morning in Godby.

The Sarnians swept aside Shetlands

7-0 in the Alands Idrottscenter in their opening group B game, much to the delight of Phil Ogier.

‘That was excellent. I’m really pleased with that,’ said the player-captain.

‘It’s always good to get off to good start and to win 7-0, you cannot get better than that.

‘Everyone performed well this morning, albeit without really being tested, and came through any early nerves without slipping up.’

Guernsey totally dominated proceedings, dropping only one leg throughout the match against a Shetland side who could only field one female player, thus giving a walkover in the women’s doubles rubber.

Garry Dodd and Games debutant Olly Langlois both raced through their two singles rubbers while Dawn Morgan came back from losing her opening leg to secure her own individual victory.

She teamed up with Ogier to claim the mixed rubber.
