GUERNSEY’S first racing wheelchair competitor has his sights set on future Island Games competition after he smashed his best time for the half marathon by more than an hour.

Aindre Reece-Sheerin completed the Zakia Father’s Day Half Marathon in a staggering time of 1hr 26min. 5sec, which was the 13th fastest time of the day.

Last year, the 52-year-old, who is a passionate campaigner for disabled rights, finished the 13.1-mile race in 2-29.00.

‘I smashed, thrashed and blasted my last year’s effort,’ he said.

‘I did it in a standard wheelchair last year but I really pulled out the stops this year.’

Reece-Sheerin took delivery of a specialised racing wheelchair three months ago.

The chair came courtesy of donations from the Guernsey Sports Commission, Sportingbet, Garenne Group and MeesPierson.

Since then he had been regularly getting up at 5.30am to hit the streets training.

These past two years, Reece-Sheerin has taken part on behalf of the Guernsey MS Society as one of his best friends has the condition.

At the time of going to print, it was not known how much he had raised, but in the 2008 event he pulled in more than £2,000.
