Second bronze from the dojo

Alex MannALEX MANN (pictured) won Guernsey’s second bronze medal on the judo mats yesterday.

His third place finish went with Roberto Mascherucci’s brave effort of Sunday when he won the 73kg bronze with a broken big toe, at the Idrottsgarden.

Mann’s success came in the 66kg category after an epic eight minute battle with Enrique Bagur Llopis of Menorca that went to a judge’s decision.

‘I’m exhausted but very happy,’ said the 19-year-old afterwards.

‘He was strong with good grips, but he couldn’t execute his entrances.’

It was not such a good day for Guernsey’s other competitor in the dojo yesterday – Ben Chapple.

The 81kg fighter ended up agonisingly just outside the medals in fourth place after he went down at the hands of Menorcan Jose Escriva Estruch.

‘I went to throw him and he countered it,’ said Chapple.

‘He did what I’m good at, holding down, and I couldn’t get out of it.

It was a good fight.  ‘The one thing I didn’t want to do was to lose to a stupid mistake and I didn’t.’

The Sarnian judo players have a rest day before the team event gets under way tomorrow.
