Goubert falls just short of golden aim

SOMETIMES good things do not come to those who wait.
Archer Chantelle Goubert had been leading the Fita women’s recurve competition right up to the final distance of 30m yesterday.
It was believed that she was on for gold after the final arrow had been shot at the Backeberg Sportsgrounds.
But after an agonising two-and-a-half hour wait while the organisers compiled the results, it was announced that the 24-year-old Sarnian had come third with a score of 1,142 points that earned her a Fita 1,100 award.
She was clearly disappointed not to have won gold but she was philosophical about the whole affair.
‘It’s a little bit tough but I came out here to get my 1,100 and what else will come from it will come from it,’ she said.
‘I get to take a bronze tear drop back home with me.’
These were 24-year-old Goubert’s fourth Games after taking up archery 10 years ago. She also won bronze in Rhodes, two years ago.
