‘I’m not going back on Cobo without shoes’

ISLANDERS need to improve the way they treat their beaches, said a parish constable after more concerns were raised over the state of Cobo.

The comment came after part-time receptionist Sarah Goubert, 36, passed on her concerns to Castel constable Barry Paint.

During her last few visits to the beach with her two-year-old son, Ezra, she has come across empty drink cans which had been turned as sharp as razor blades by the elements.

‘Never mind the natural dangers of jellyfish and weaver fish, now I know what man-made dangers might be lurking in the sand or in the sea. I don’t think myself or my son will be going to the beach again without our beach shoes,’ she said.

‘The thought of him stepping on one of these drink can tops makes me feel sick to the stomach.’

She added that she believed that there was no excuse for littering.

Mr Paint said that he was concerned that people were not being responsible. ‘It’s not a case of the litter problem getting any worse, it just hasn’t got any better,’ he said.

Too right – I have been saying this for years.

I actually gave up going to Cobo (despite it being the beach of my childhood) because I got fed up with having to sit among the chip wrappers and drinks cans.

It is not tourists (and it is not only kids) who are ruining Cobo, I have seen local adults leave their rubbish all over the beach. They should be ashamed of themselves.

My wife and I have been visiting Guernsey for 25 years this year and Cobo for 20 years, our children have grown up now and always loved Cobo Bay we had full confidence in letting them play on the beach there but now we would think twice.

The standards have now sadly slipped and its not just the beach what with all them scrap cars dumped on the car park and the lack of pride and respect of people who just trash the place by dumping cans litter anything anywhere.

If I was a first time visitor I wouldnt return its so sad to see it go down the pan.

I dont bother going down Cobo anymore, i go to Rocquaine, there is hardly any rubbish down there and seems very clean.
Cobo use to be lovely but not any more, it only takes a couple of mins if that to pick up your rubbish and despose of it, if you ask me… there is just no excuse and litter louts are just plain lazy.
