A high minimum wage would put guest-worker jobs at risk

SETTING the minimum wage too high could cost jobs in the horticultural industry, a guest workers’ agent has warned.
Rodney Brouard, managing director of Stan Brouard Ltd, has been bringing foreign workers into Guernsey for more than 20 years and securing them jobs within the horticultural and agricultural industries.
He said the sector had shrunk by about two-thirds since he started and he feared more companies would go out of business if Commerce and Employment set the rate too high.
The department has this week gone out to public consultation to help it decide what the minimum wage should be.
Mr Brouard (pictured) said workers he brought over, all from Madeira or Latvia, were paid a little more than £4 per hour as a basic wage.
However, they also received set bonuses, free transport to and from work, accommodation for £50 a week that included all bills, and overtime at time-and-a-quarter.
‘If it is pitched too high, it will just put more horticultural companies out of business,’ he said.
‘In the end these people will not have jobs. Both Madeira and Latvia are really struggling so these people have come over here to make money, do lots of overtime and send the money back home.’

Latvians over here because they’re struggling and need to send money home? I’m sure that applies in a number of cases but we also appear to have a number of them here who have ‘struggled’ their way into ownership of very expensive cars such as BMW’s and Mercs which we frequently see with ‘LV’ plates. I doubt that they’re here for the same reason.
Agree with Conrad by the way.

Don’t worry your money’s safe.
Quote taken from the states consultation ducument reads as follows: The minimum wage is not intended to reflect a “living wage”.
If that’s a reflection of fair play someones living on another planet.
Minimum wage in my eyes should be at least £10 an hour for a living wage, shame the states want us to survive on a non living wage.

Rodney brouard should hang his head in shame. his comments try to justify exploitation of foreign workers. If you cant pay a proper wage get out of business.Mrs t. you dont have a clue your comments demonstrate a lack of knowledge.Have you ever spoken to anyone from Madiera,Poland or Latvia? I know some of these people working 80 hrs a week and no they aren’t airport firemen.

I know of a very popular bar in town which offered a local university student £2.60 per hour plus tips for summer holiday bar work last week. Outrageous. Needless to say it was declined.

Maybe he`s just being honest regardless of how unpopular it sounds. If there is merit in what he says then what is wrong with him telling it like it is? after all he is running a business so he should know what he`s talking about?.
Just my views as i have no idea the effects of a minimum wage.
