Bowled over by Jersey
Saturday 11th July 2009, 2:29PM BST.
DEPUTIES got another chance to swing bats at each other yesterday as Guernsey States members tried to avenge last year’s defeat in the political cricket match against Jersey.
Last year, Chief Minister Lyndon Trott swore that it would be Guernsey bringing the trophy back from the next meeting after his Jersey counterpart Frank Walker bowled him out for a duck.
But despite putting up a brave effort yesterday, the team missed out to the defending champions by three runs with a final score of 188 for five after 30 overs.
Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara said everyone had a great time.
‘It was a very close game and we were disappointed to have just missed out,’ he said.
‘Of course the real winner is the camaraderie between the two islands, which this day has been all about.’
Deputy O’Hara also expressed his thanks to sponsor Investec for organising the event so well.
GFSC director-general Nik van Leuven was top scorer for Guernsey, hitting 60 runs, closely followed by Deputy O’Hara with 58.
