Top two third in UK
Monday 13th July 2009, 2:30PM BST.
GUERNSEY’S top two athletes both struck bronze at the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships yesterday in Birmingham.
Lee Merrien (pictured) featured in a thrilling 5,000m race in which he was part of the lead pack throughout and involved in a dramatic sprint finish.
Long-time leader Scot Overall proved to have enough left in the tank to make a successful break for the line and win in 13min. 57.75sec., but he had second-placed Ryan McLeod and Merrien close behind.
Merrien had moved past McLeod briefly on the last lap, but in the end he had to settle for third in 13-59.35.
‘Bronze today so I cannot complain, especially after a mixed start to the season,’ said Merrien last night on his blog.
In the 400m hurdles final, Dale Garland claimed bronze in 50.92sec. He had won his heat in 51.89.
