Duo set to miss out on Berlin
Tuesday 14th July 2009, 2:30PM BST.
BOTH Dale Garland and Lee Merrien are resigned to the fact that they will not be going to the World Championships.
The island’s two top athletes finished third in the 400m hurdles and 5,000m respectively at the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham over the weekend.
The 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics are taking place in Berlin, Germany, next month.
To book his place on the plane, Garland, 28 (pictured), needed to reach the 400m hurdles A standard of 49.25sec in Birmingham.
His personal best is 49.79.
Before the meeting, the Olympian said that the conditions would have to be ideal and that he would need to run a dream race to be able to make the A standard.
In Sunday’s final, he crossed the line in 50.92.
‘The conditions weren’t that good,’ he said. ‘It was a shame. The day before was good but the winds changed around and picked up. It wasn’t going to happen. I needed the conditions to be perfect.’
