Lowe requete given all clear

Wednesday 15th July 2009, 2:29PM BST.

Mary LoweDEPUTIES have been told that the wording of the airport firefighters’ requete was no longer a concern.

The motion, signed by 18 deputies led by Deputy Mary Lowe (pictured), calls for a tribunal of inquiry into what led to the breakdown of pay talks and strike action at the airport.

The tribunal would compel people to give evidence.

States chief executive Mike Brown and legal advisor Crown Advocate Richard McMahon held discussions with some of the requerants at the end of last month.

The two men had written a joint advisory note to all members saying that the original wording was too restrictive.

At the request of Deputy Lowe, Mr Brown has written again to all deputies.

‘The published requete contains very clear terms of reference which do not, in my view, restrict the inquiry in any sense and so meet that objective of the recommendation in the advisory note,’ said Mr Brown.

‘For the avoidance of doubt, the advisory note did not form any fixed view on the most appropriate form of inquiry, that being a matter for political consideration. I wish you well in your debate.’

The issue is set to be debated during the States meeting that begins today. It is expected to be the last item on the agenda.
